The article first identifies the characteristics of shamedriven reminiscences. It then explains how poetic paradox can draw troubled members from relentless self-criticism toward increasing self-acceptance of their life remembered. Finally, it concludes with illustrations of poetic paradox and the enabling responses that occur among the group participants.
